Gibraltar Hybrid Events: Hospitality Health and Safety and the Future of Business Meetings in Gibraltar

April 01, 2021

Having emerged from a rather challenging year within the Hospitality sector in 2020, corporate venues and Hotels are now getting ready for a new era of business meetings and events, corporate and leisure travel.

Corporate travellers from gaming, insurance, banks, law firms and cryptocurrency sector had been visiting Gibraltar on a regular basis to form new relationships, relocate, invest, for training purposes, business meetings or high-end corporate Incentives.

Gibraltar is known for hosting great Cryptocurrency events and conferences, as well as other industry gatherings attracting investors from all over the world. Although, a lot of businesses have moved their events online, Gibraltar offers a superior experience for hosting corporate events.

As business travel stopped completely during the last year, Hotels and other corporate venues had to revamp their health and safety protocols and increase their use of digital tools to adapt to the new ‘normal’ and make travelling, meetings and corporate events as safe as possible for their future guests.

Hospitality in Gibraltar is getting ready for the very cautious traveller and at the same time for the unwary easy-going guest demanding the same services and standards as they were pre–pandemic. Trying to bring these two competing requirements together is walking a fine line between adhering strictly to health and safety measurements in place and providing guests with world class service and an ambiance of relaxation to just enjoy the moment.

Spacious accommodation, private balconies, access to fresh air, space rich terraces, open public areas, ventilation and filtered air-conditioning system, a thought-out health and safety concept, spacious public and Restaurant venues, intimate meeting rooms, private dining areas, in room dining, take away options – all of these attributes have become most important for travellers when looking for accommodation or meetings post pandemic - Gibraltar possesses.

New concepts currently include wearing masks in all public spaces, disinfectant at all entry levels, meeting rooms and Restaurants. Protective screens have been installed to ensure a safer check in and Reservation process. Social distancing procedures are maintained in the Restaurants and meeting room areas to enable a safe and fluid dining experience.

Hotels in general have increasingly embraced the digital world with providing online check in and payment and increased communication via social media channels to decrease contact and touchpoints upon arrival and during the stay.

Not only the hardware within hospitality had to change though. Especially employees had to adapt and focus on their guests more emotionally than ever before. Expectations have changed considerably. Trust and care have become exponentially more important for guests when planning a trip or a meeting. To make someone feel safe, trust needs to be established first. Be it trust in the product, the service or a newly adapted health and safety concept. Hospitality employees had to adapt to being increasingly considerate about their guests’ feelings and concerns when it comes to health and safety. The right communication of new service standards and changing restrictions along a customer’s journey have become important factors to create trust and credibility. Ever changing rules and restrictions had and have to be communicated consistently, so the customer is aware of what to expect when coming to stay in Gibraltar

While current restrictions in Gibraltar are not allowing more than 12 guests to meet at a time yet, Hotels are getting ready to cater for corporate travellers, leisure guests and meetings and events once restrictions on gatherings are fully lifted. Obviously, concepts will have to change to cater for smaller and more intimate meetings and a heightened level of care on safety will still have to be provided in an insecure world of concerns about travel and meeting people that will still be existent amongst us. What was a huge breakfast buffet in the past, now is a la carte breakfast. Canape’s for a networking event being served as a flying buffet, will have to be delivered plated and consumed seated – subject to change. When can a Networking Event be held without having to split up and meet via Zoom online? Some as people are craving a holiday, companies are keen to meet clients in person again after over a year of virtual meetings and establish new business relationships in the local Gibraltar market and beyond.

With Gibraltar being the first nation in the world to have a fully vaccinated adult population, there is light at the end of the tunnel that corporate meetings and events in Gibraltar as well as leisure travel will be possible in a certain way earlier than anywhere else in the world.

New flight connections to Gibraltar via WizzAir and Eastern Airways from Birmingham and Southampton starting from May will have a major impact on travel and the hospitality industry in Gibraltar, should travel restrictions be lifted by then. The newly launched Edinburgh route via Easyjet will also be picked up again at the end of May and open another market for Gibraltar.
